Cartoons About Therapy from the Past Century

For The New Yorker’s 2023 Therapy Issue, I designed a playful collection page to showcase selections from the magazine’s deep archive of drawn neuroses.

Orderly and Playful

The cartoons team selected dozens of examples from the magazine’s long history that they wanted to showcase in this special digital issue. We decided to organize this material by decade, and I implemented a design that felt referential of an analog calendar. Adding playful glimpses at each decade’s style added some of the cartoons department’s personality to what could have otherwise been a somewhat dry archival collection.

Decade Details

Using modals and x-axis overflow scrolling to showcase each decade’s cartoons kept readers in a single viewport, reducing scroll fatigue and encouraging longer engagements.
